Tripping Breakers

Have Tripping Breakers?

If you have ever experienced the frustration of a tripped circuit breaker, you know it can interrupt your day. At Gravette Electrical Services, we believe that understanding why this happens can help you troubleshoot and maintain a safe, efficient home. In this blog post we will explore the causes of tripping breakers.

     What is a circuit breaker?

A circuit breaker is an important safety device in your electrical system. It is designed to protect your home from electrical overloads and short circuits by interrupting the flow of electricity when it detects and issue. This helps prevent fires and damage to your appliances.

    Common causes of tripping breakers.

1) Overloaded Circuits

Plugging too many devices on a single circuit can exceed its capacity, leading to overheating and tripping.

A solution to this is, distribute your appliances across different circuits. If you frequently overload a specific circuit, consider having an electrician add additional circuits in that area of the home.

2) Short Circuits

A short circuit occurs when a hot wire touches a neutral wire, causing a sudden surge of electricity.

A solution is unplugging devices plugged in on that circuit, then reset the breaker. If it continues to trip, you may need a professional to diagnose the wiring or devices.

3) Ground Fault

A ground fault happens when a hot wire makes contact with a ground wire or the grounded part of the electrical system.

If a GFCI device trips, try unplugging and appliances on the circuit and resetting the ground fault or circuit breaker, if they will not reset consult an electrician to examine the wiring.

4) Fault Circuit Breaker

Sometimes, the breaker itself can be the problem.  If it is old or faulty, it may trip frequently, even if the circuit is not overloaded. We suggest hiring an electrician to swap out any faulty breakers, as this can be a dangerous job.

5) Loose Connections

Loose wires, poor connections, or damaged wiring can lead to tripping circuit breakers. Loose connections cause a lot of heat in the wiring, which in return heats up the circuit breaker, When the breaker detects this heat it interrupts the flow of electricity.  We suggest hiring an electrical contractor to find these issues, as sometimes it can be tricky to locate.
